About CMAI

CMAI is a forum, a gathering place, an association and eventually, a potent instrument to bring about social reform.

We are a fellowship of doctors, nurses, administrators, chaplains and allied health professionals and we work on various fronts, in diverse sectors, to bring relief from pain and the joy of health among India’s poorest and most deprived sections of society, the people whom the rest of the world forgot.

CMAI believes that the Biblical faith calls us and commands us to a Mission to proclaim the Gospel and to heal the sick, the suffering and the downtrodden. We strive to make health, healing and wholeness a reality to all.

We also assist and support the Church and its healthcare institutions to rededicate themselves to this mission. We encourage them to broaden their vision; we enthuse them to adopt a wider understanding of the concept of health, healing and wholeness. We urge them to go beyond community health to healing communities.

Our Mission

In response to the love and command of Christ, CMAI’s mission is to serve the churches in India in its ministry of healing and to build a just and healthy society.

CMAI History

The history of CMAI dates back to 1905 when a group of missionaries serving in India, set up the Medical Missionary Association (MMA), a forum for supporting each other professionally and spiritually. In 1926, it was renamed as Christian Medical Association of India, and has grown in strength by keeping pace with the changing healthcare needs in this country. CMAI has done pioneering work in several areas, including leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS.

CMAI’s Objectives

1. Prevention and relief of human suffering irrespective of caste, creed, community, religion and economic status.
2. Promotion of knowledge of the factors governing health.
3. Coordination of activities for training doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and others involved in the ministry of healing.
4. Implementation of schemes for comprehensive health care, family planning and community welfare.
5. Rendering health in calamities and disasters of all kinds.

Essence of CMAI

1. We are a registered, non-profit, charitable organisation.
2. CMAI is the health arm of National Council of Churches in India (NCCI).
3. Our members are over 330 Christian health institutions and over 9000 health professionals.
4. We undertake programmes in training, research, community service, institutional consultancy, policy advocacy, interface of theology and medicine, information dissemination and others.
5. We welcome all Christian healthcare institutions and professionals into our fold. CMAI is a forum, a gathering place, an association and eventually, a potent instrument to bring about social reform.
